Lord Shiva is a major Hindu deity who is often described as a combination of contradictory elements, such as the destroyer and the restorer, the ascetic and the sensual, and the benevolent and the wrathful.  Shiva is one of the three gods in the Hindu triumvirate, along with Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva’s role is to destroy the universe in order to recreate it, which Hindus believe is a constructive act that paves the way for beneficial change. Shiva is often depicted with a blue neck, white body, and three eyes. He wears a crescent moon and the Ganges River in his hair, and a garland of skulls and a serpent around his neck. Shiva can be represented in many forms, including as a yogi, a beggar, a householder, or the cosmic dancer Nataraja. Shiva is closely associated with the Linga, a phallus or symbol of fertility or divine energy. He is also shown with a cobra necklace, which symbolizes his power over dangerous creatures. Shiva’s relationship with his wife, Parvati, brings him balance. They have two children, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Shiva is also known as Adi yogi, the first Yogi, and is regarded as the patron god of yoga, meditation, and the arts.
