Some foods to help you feel better.

In a world of overcomplicated health advice, simplicity still holds power. The human body thrives not on trends, but on consistency—on the quiet discipline of daily choices.

I recently began research for my marathon training and in my search I found that certain organs are affected the most when humans run long distances. I have compiled a list of foods that help each of these organs. Some of the foods overlap with other organs so that is a plus. I have not included foods for muscles and the skeletal system because those are commonly known and are usually the main focus of peoples’ diets when training.

Remember each person reacts differently to foods so the portions vary significantly. If you have any allergies or are on medication please consult a doctor before you start consuming these foods.

Foundational Habits

Before diving into organ-specific nutrition, there are three essentials worth reinforcing:

  • Water intake: Hydration remains non-negotiable. It supports every cellular function and keeps metabolic processes running smoothly.
  • Green tea: Known for its antioxidant properties, it’s a gentle stimulant and a natural detoxifier.
  • Moringa: Rich in vitamins, minerals, and anti-inflammatory compounds, moringa is a versatile addition to any wellness routine.

For the Heart

Cardiovascular health responds best to a diet rooted in balance. The following foods support circulation, reduce inflammation, and help regulate cholesterol:

  • Leafy greens
  • Fresh fruits
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes
  • Nuts
  • Fish and chicken (lean sources)
  • Low-fat dairy

On long runs you need your heart to function optimally and these foods assist in maintaining blood pressure and in reducing inflammation which helps in recovery. These ingredients form the backbone of heart-conscious cooking—simple, affordable, and widely accessible.

For the Kidneys

The kidneys require foods that reduce oxidative stress and support filtration. A kidney-friendly plate includes:

  • Berries, apples, red grapes
  • Fish
  • Olive oil
  • Cabbage, cauliflower
  • Red bell peppers
  • Onions and garlic

These choices help maintain kidney function without overloading the system with sodium or excess protein.

For the Lungs

Respiratory health is often overlooked in dietary planning, but certain foods can enhance lung capacity and reduce inflammation:

  • Leafy greens
  • Fish
  • Berries
  • Ginger and garlic
  • Nuts
  • Beets
  • Fiber-rich carbohydrates
  • Turmeric
  • Antioxidant-rich produce

If your lungs are not healthy you won’t be able to run for long. These ingredients support blood-oxygen flow, reduce mucus buildup, and strengthen immune response.

Another important detail to point out here is that people who smoke generally have weak lungs. There are exceptions where we see chain smokers running marathons- looking at you Uncle Chen! However, if you are a smoker please shift your nicotine needs to patches and try to wean off of them gradually. Smoking is terrible for you and you may not know this but there are people who care if you exist.

When stressed, please do not smoke instead grab something to eat. From personal experience- I have quit smoking successfully for over 5 years. When I get cravings I have contingencies such as a packet of peanuts or an apple to distract myself from that craving. I also make sure I take deep breaths to relax myself. Its easier to deflect than it is to resist an urge.

For the GI Tract

Gut health is central to overall wellness. A well-functioning digestive system improves nutrient absorption, mood regulation, and immunity. Key foods include:

  • Whole grains: oats, barley, whole wheat
  • Yoghurt and fermented foods: kimchi, kefir
  • Fruits: apples, pears, bananas, berries
  • Legumes: beans, lentils, peas
  • Prebiotic-rich vegetables: onions, garlic, fenugreek (methi)

Your gut is affected intensely as your abdominal muscles are used when running. Issues like nausea, cramping, and diarrhea due to reduced blood flow to the gut and mechanical irritation. There is a term for it called Runner’s Stomach where the runner feels like “shit”- for lack of a better word. These foods promote microbial diversity and reduce inflammation in the digestive tract. Focus on this for general health too.

Supporting Detoxification

While the body has its own detox systems, certain foods can enhance their efficiency:

  • Pomegranate
  • Avocado
  • Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower
  • Leafy greens
  • Cilantro
  • Fish
  • Walnuts (omega-3 fatty acids)
  • Almonds
  • Whole grains

These ingredients help flush out toxins, support liver function, and reduce oxidative stress. For your long runs you want a tuned up, clean body, much like a car engine. These foods are just like motor oil and grease. You don’t have to like them but they are important.

Wellness isn’t built in a day—it’s built in the quiet repetition of meals, habits, and choices that respect the body’s design. Whether this becomes part of your marathon training, or just a part of your general health, the message is clear: food is not just fuel—it’s instruction. Savor every bite and be real with your choices.

I am trying to make this into a regular series where I write about my experiences and what I learn from my training as a first time marathoner. If you like what you see please extend your opinions in the comments. Thanks for reading!
