What’s a common misconception people have about happiness?
Most people find themselves looking for happiness in the wrong places. While some are wise to be happy with the small things in life, others are conveniently oblivious to it. It sounds clichéd but there is truth to it.
There are four types of happiness some last temporarily and are immediate. The others are long lasting.
The difference is easier to explain with examples:
Dopamine is released when you watch a funny video or get good grades in an exam. Its associated with reward and motivation.
Serotonin is released when you go out in the sun, when you do stress reducing exercises like meditation or painting. It manifests as feeling centered, emotionally resilient, deeply calm, and mentally focused, giving you a general sense that- all is right in the world.
Oxytocin also known as the love chemical is released with intimate physical touch. For example cuddling with a loved one releases this chemical.
Endorphins are released due to intense physical activity usually giving a sense of euphoria. For example runners often face intense highs when they finish a long run.
Generally people chase Dopamine with short-term goals. Which is completely fine but for long-term happiness, satisfaction and gratefulness are necessary. You get to choose between four types of happiness. If you feel unhappy in life try chasing the other chemicals too. Dopamine is just one part of the whole.
One cannot deny the fact that in order to appreciate the highs one must go through the lows. In order to appreciate the highs one must have some apreciation for the limited time we experience on Earth. Not just the Earth but also the beauty and the ugly that comes with it. One can say that happiness is a choice. It is up to you to stay happy. Cheers!
