Union Misal: Heritage Misal in Old Panvel

If you ever find yourself wandering the charming streets of Old Panvel, make sure to stop by Union Misal at Tapal Naka. This humble eatery, owned and operated by the Khalde family for three generations, is a true testament to the rich culinary heritage of the region. Sunil Khalde, the current head of the family, continues the 90-year-old legacy with pride and passion.

The Legacy of Union Misal

Union Misal is not just a place to eat; it’s a piece of Panvel’s history. For 90 years, this establishment has been serving up its signature dish, Misal, to locals and visitors alike. Misal (misəɭ) is a spicy curry made with sprouted moong beans, lentils, or moth beans (matki in Marathi). It is served with a layer of oil tempered with spices, known as kat pronounced cut, and crunchy sev gathi topping.

Our Experience

At Union Misal, they specialize and exclusively serve moong misal, a dish so finely tuned to the local palate that 80% of their customers are regulars. Sunil Khalde has perfected the recipe to cater to their tastes, making it a highly localized delicacy. While some might find the unique flavor different, we absolutely loved it. The spices are prepared in-house, and the sev gathis are made by the owner himself, ensuring a fresh and authentic taste.

But the experience doesn’t stop at misal. Union Misal also serves delicious batata vadas that pair perfectly with the spicy curry. And what’s a good snack without a strong cup of tea? Their tea is not too sweet but packs a punch, rounding off the meal beautifully.

The modest setting of Union Misal is made even more special by the presence of Sunil Khalde, a jolly and generous man who personally serves his customers. He’s not just a restaurateur but a prominent figure in the community, heading the local Ganesh Mandal in Tapal Naka. His efforts in organizing and building the “King of the Environment” Ganpati in the local temple are well-recognized.

A Must-Visit in Panvel

Union Misal is more than just a place to eat; it’s a cultural landmark in Panvel. The slightly spicy misal, the delicious kat, the crunchy sev gathi, and the unique batata vadas all come together to create a memorable culinary experience. And the strong tea is the perfect finishing touch. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the warm company of Mr. Khalde. If you’re ever in Panvel, Union Misal is a must-visit.
