Travel Light

What’s your best tip for budget travel?

I traveled a lot as a kid as up until 5 years ago I was constantly travelling and moving around.

My biggest take is to travel light. You don’t want to lug huge bags around. If you think you need it you can probably find it in the destination country. Take only essentials with you like medicines and travel documents.

When travelling on a budget hostels are cheap and convenient and you can almost always find street food in most places. If you have dietary restrictions local fruits are recommended first thing to adjust your gut to the local food.

If you are worried about food hygeine then a few tips would be to make sure the food is cooked and is hot when served. Take a look at the utensils if they are clean enough and are well organised then its a good place to eat. Crowds usually indicate a decent place to eat but it can take time so adjacent shops are also worth a try.

Use digital cards and phone apps. If there is a requirement for cash divide it and keep it in separate places around your person and in your bags for emergencies.

Use public transport or rent a local vehicle. Make sure you have insurance that is applicable in that area and someone knows where you are headed. Walk around whenever possible. When with family walk from one street food spot to another so you can get refreshments for the children and they can rest frequently.

Find free places to travel like the beach or a temple or a park. If you have to pay make sure its worth the experience like a museum or an adventure park.

Do not buy souvenirs from tourist markets. Rather collect something from the area like rocks, water, shells or sand and label it. Unless you find some really good handicraft items which you can’t resist.

Don’t accept anything from strangers unless it is an absolute emergency or obligation(if you are a guest at their home). More importantly don’t let anyone handle your luggage. In my experience even that old harmless innocent looking granny can be a pickpocket.

Have fun and take lots of pictures. Cheers!
