I actually love languages and I fluently speak English, Marathi, Hindi, Konkani and I am currently learning Spanish, Mandarin and relearning French. I am also learning the International Sign Language. My love for languages is rooted in culture because the community I grew up in has several families from different backgrounds. Its quite common to speak more than one language here in India.

At the end of the day it boils down to communication. I want to be able to express my thoughts and ideas. If there is a barrier I want to create a bridge as I am well aware that speaking to someone in their native language is going to have a far greater impact than if I speak to them in a foreign language.

Personally language has helped me make friends everywhere I go. I have been able to connect with people on a deeper level outside of my country. Some friends I have made will be in touch for life. Learning English in particular has helped me navigate through beaureaucratic procedures several times. Using the languages I know to communicate with people and talking my way out of tough situations has proven to be a great asset. In general languages exposed to me how different cultures evolved and how their traditions came to be.

I am an introvert and I don’t speak a lot but despite that I have more friends than I can handle because of the languages I speak. Now that AI is evolving towards making translation universal (still plenty of time) I find that there is more reason for me to learn new languages. Simply so that I can check if what’s being translated is accurate. Misunderstandings have led to wars.

I digress but the point is that I love languages and in a room full of strangers I can be the fly on the wall and really fulfill my deductive tendencies. It would be rude at first if they are nice but if they aren’t nice you know whether or not to reveal your secret skill. Also having the ability to speak multiple languages can be used in professions all around the world.
