Yesterday with great enthusiasm and joy the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi ended. The occasion is called Ananth Chaturdashi. Ananth meaning Infinite and Chaturdashi is a day in the Hindu calendar that refers to the 14th day of the waxing or waning phase of the moon. It comes before the full moon (Purnima) or new moon (Amavasya).
On this day the idols of Lord Ganesha are immersed into the nearest body of water. This way we bid farewell to Lord Ganesha and pray that he comes back next year. It is a very symbolic festival deep rooted in the Maharashtrian culture and we are sometimes emotionally attached to Lord Ganesha. However many let him go as they know he will be back the next year.
Here is a clip of the famous Lalbaugcha Raja in Mumbai being immersed (Visarjan) in the ocean:
This is not the end of the festivities however, as now we are looking forward to Navratri a festival just as integral to our society as Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali and Holi.
