Day 62/75

Day 62/75

The highlight of the day is that I started reading a new book. Its called Arthashastra Kautilya meaning Economic Sciences by Kautilya. Its filled with Indian philosophy on how a kingdom should operate. Ours is a democracy but some of these practices are still relevant so I am interested in knowing what they are. Kautilya or Chanakya was a Prime Minister and Advisor to King Chandragupta Maurya. He raised Maurya himself training him to be a Warrior and King and the empire spread across majority of the country that we know today as India. At its peak it was a super power and its defenses were unmatched. Apparently Kautilya had approached one of the kingdoms to become one of the advisors but was insulted and exiled. He came across a bunch of boys playing and one of the boys was acting as king and he chose that boy to be the man who would lead one of the most remarkable kingdoms Indian history has ever witnessed. I am keen to know what one man who raised an entire nation out of spite has to offer.

That was the highlight of the day. The tasks were completed on time. I did not push myself as hard as I’d like to at the gym. I trained legs. I also went for my walk in the evening but my right hip started cramping so I had to slow down my pace. I was defeated by a toddler but my resolve led me to push through the entire 45 minutes limping along the way. Day 62 was a success.

I’m not familiar with Arthashastra. I’ll have to look it up!

Yes please do! From what I have read so far it showcases critical thinking in the form of multiple scenarios. For example if a king wants to hire ministers how should he go about it? then the book presents multiple scenarios such as classmates, friends, brothers, cousins, strangers, public, high class members etc and then presents the pros and cons of each type of person. One thing however is that the book also brings you to a conclusion of who to choose which is a little odd but I guess its more of a recommendation than a concrete decision. It is quite similar to Meditations by Marcus Aurelius (Antoninus) but the language goes into scenarios for you instead of allowing you to think about it critically. Which is strange but a very Indian (or tiger parent) trait when you think about it lol.
